A Guide to Tractor Maintenance

Performing tractor maintenance will keep your equipment running smoothly and help it stay out of the service shop. Although you can’t prevent every potential issue, there are some simple maintenance tasks you can do to keep your tractor operating at its full potential. 1. Check the Owner’s Manual

The best place to start when it comes to tractor maintenance is with the owner’s manual. This will provide you with specific information related to your model. This may include what tasks you should be doing, how often, and what products you should use.

2. Radiator Fluid

A common tractor issue is an overheated engine. This can be avoided by using radiator fluid. As a part of your routine maintenance, check the fluid level daily and top it off as needed. There will be some gradual fluid loss, but if you are having to replace a high amount of fluid each day, there may be a larger issue. 

3. Engine Oil

Engine oil is an important lubricant that will keep your tractor running smoothly. Check the engine oil regularly as a part of your maintenance. Make sure to run your machine for a few minutes and then shut it off for a few minutes before checking the oil. If the oil is discolored or sludgy, you'll have to replace the oil and the filter.

4. Tires

Checking the tires of your tractor is an often overlooked part of maintenance. If the tires are not properly inflated, you may damage the equipment or put yourself in an unsafe situation. Measure the air pressure with a tire pressure gauge every so often. Make sure the air pressure is up to standards according to the manufacturer.

5. Fuel

Fresh fuel is a critical component of maintaining your tractor. If your machine sits in storage without being used, there could be problems with the fuel. Add some fuel stabilizer to the tank. This will prevent water from separating out of the fuel. Fuel stabilizer will help prevent rust or engine damage too. Don’t forget to add fuel stabilizer to backup fuel too!
